HOW RUBY BRIDGES SURVIVED.

How did Ruby Bridges survive the desegregation law uproar on her first day in an all-white school? A few adults who knew better, supported her at the time.

The little girl was six years old when she went to William Franz Elementary school that beautiful Monday morning. Federal marshalls protected her from the angry crowd of protesters.

Barbara Henry made it easier for her, when livid parents took their children out of the school. And the teachers, refused to teach her.

Bridges was alone in her class, for one full year. She could not go out for recess either. When she became older, she admitted that being the only one in the class affected her.

Another hero, Dr. Robert Coles, a child psychiatrist, helped her survive the discrimination. He gave the little girl free sessions every day after school.

Dr. Coles also bought her the white dresses she wore to William Franz Elementary school. He later wrote a book about her experience and gave all the proceeds to a foundation in her name.

We should not forget judge J. Skelly Wright. He enforced the law of desegregation in the schools in New Orleans. He could have found a way to dodge it or twist it. He did the right thing.

These positive actions have contributed to the America we all enjoy today.

Ruby Bridges is now sixty-nine years old. She is still fighting against racism. It is still a problem in America. But it is better than it was sixty-three years ago.

Phew!

Do you think Ruby’s mother should never have allowed her child go through that trauma? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
