In 1898, another African woman became the first ex-enslaved African allowed to have a medical license in Georgia, south of America.
Note that Ms Grier was born and lived in southern part of America where they refused to let their slaves go. It took a civil war and the loss of many lives to grant them freedom.
And here came Eliza Anne Grier asking for permission to learn medicine and practice it. The body in charge tried everything they could to make her give up. Eliza had to attend medical school by alternating work on the cotton fields with learning medicine. Working was vital to make money to pay for the schooling.
Anyway, that is how the first African woman doctor was born in Georgia. Unfortunately, she passed away in her thirties. Only five years after she received her medical license, Can you share an experience that makes you a first of the lot in anything? How successful did you feel?
